Who we are

The Tula Foundation is an independent charitable foundation, rooted in British Columbia, but with global interests and outreach. We have used our facilities and resources to create a huge network of collaborators from academia, government agencies and First Nations. Our collective efforts have catalyzed an enormous quantity of science, education and stewardship. Our divisions include:

  • Hakai Institute, an active, engaged scientific research institution with ecological observation stations on Calvert Island and Quadra Island is known for the long-term research we do on BC’s coast, for the scientific papers we publish, and for the compelling media, we create.
  • Quadra Centre for Coastal Dialogue is the division supporting meetings and workshops wherever they may happen, as well as hosting these on Quadra Island itself with meeting space and dorms.
  • Media - the Media team showcases the work we all do through video and award-winning journalism
  • The Ocean Decade Collaborative Center for the Northeast Pacific (DCC) supports the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (the Ocean Decade 2021-2030) by facilitating partnerships and seeking connections in ocean communities.
  • TulaHealth (TulaSalud) supports health systems for developing countries, particularly Guatemala’s rural indigenous communities, by providing education and resources.

To facilitate these endeavors, we need the concerted effort of a team that supports it all. More than anything else, it is the quality of that team that supports our work, but crucially, it also supports our partnerships with other organizations and distinguishes us as a cut above.

Who we’re looking for

We are looking for highly dedicated individuals, people who embrace our scientific and service mission; people who don't see their work in isolation and can see the bigger picture – those who want to be a key member of a big team that is doing great work collectively. We’re looking for people not satisfied with one monotonous role – people who are willing to pitch in anywhere and who want to learn all the things.

We are looking for a liaison between our team of gardeners and our knowledgeable chefs; someone who will follow the process from growing and harvesting our vegetables, fruits & herbs, incorporating them into our meal plans; achieving our goal to dine where the food is produced.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • In the garden: tending to the garden, troubleshooting growth problems, weeding, irrigation, harvesting, and cleaning vegetables for direct use in our kitchens
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation in the facility
  • Assist anywhere in the kitchen during production as needed
  • Pitch in where needed, anywhere on site
  • Continuously seek opportunities to grow and learn within the organization

  • Minimum 2 Years’ Cooking Experience with a valid food-safe certificate
  • Experience with food/vegetable production in greenhouses and outdoor fields
  • Enjoys working outdoors – in all the various Pacific North conditions
  • Flexibility with dates and location of work
  • Comfortable living and working in a remote setting for extended periods
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask
  • Capable of moving, lifting, carrying up to 50 pounds, and standing for extended periods
  • Access to reliable transportation
